Our ApproachPartners through
all of life's chapters
As financial stewards and fiduciaries who are morally and legally obligated to put our
clients' best interests first, we do that initially through listening meetings-we want to know what you care about, your view of the future, issues in the present, market risk preferences, special family considerations, current risk management approaches with your insurance, income vs. monthly expense structure-everything. We ask about your dreams, fears, and ambitions. We want to know where you'd like to go. If we partner up, we then work with you as partners to build a plan to get there. And we educate along the way. You are a full partner in these ongoing discussions. Our clients love that collaborative approach.
We never recommend investments or strategies in a vacuum; instead, we let your needs and our problem-solving approach drive us to the right investment strategies. And we manage risk in part through proper diversification strategies and the tactical use of insurance, when appropriate. We are a problem-solving firm, not a sales organization. And we use sophisticated financial planning tools to guide us and educate you on the best options for your life's adventure.
How we helpYour Partner in building
a strong financial foundation
Financial Education
Our number one job as a financial professional is to demystify investing for our clients, and help them grow wise in investing. Our job is to help them make wise decisions. Our job is to educate as well as be good stewards. We have found that clients who understand the implications of different investment approaches make much better decisions and have greater independence. They sleep better at night. There is no shortage of information on the Internet about investing or investment tools. There is almost too much information. How is someone supposed to sort through the hundreds of suggestions, the radio talk shows, the financial newsletters—it’s almost overwhelming for the average person. That’s where an ethical and experienced professional comes in—someone who wants to help, has no particular products he or she is under pressure from someone to sell, and someone who can start with problem-solving, after listening to what a client’s goals are.
We keep education simple, and talk in simple terms. We make our client partners, not customers. Unlike some financial people, we don’t talk down to our clients, nor do we talk over their heads. We first listen to our clients, then we explore together what makes sense. We have been blessed with very high client retention over the years, and we think this approach is why our clients stay—and refer their friends and family to us.
Retirement Planning
Retirement planning is never simple. How much money do you need to have at retirement? When should you apply for Social Security benefits? Do you still need Growth investments in retirement? How do you protect your investments from the occasional negative market or recession? How much is a prudent amount to withdraw without running out of money? Should charitable giving be factored into your retirement plans? These are just some of the questions we help address with our clients. The greatest fear many people have is outliving their money. Sometimes people aren’t sure what kind of insurance they should keep in retirement—or if they need insurance at all. We help people analyze these kinds of issues to position people to work toward their hopes and dreams. It is said we’re in the financial services business. Well, we’re actually in the Make Dreams Possible business.
Life Transitions
With over 25 years in financial services, our team has lived a lot of life and seen thousands of our clients’ and friends’ transition through job loss, divorce, new children, selling a business, inheriting money from their parents, nursing home decisions, the sudden death of a spouse, and a myriad of other life transitions. We’ve also helped our clients with advice on how to maximize their leverage when buying a car, home-buying decisions, reducing credit card debt, and other financial decisions. As we say in Texas, “this isn’t our first rodeo.”
All of these life transitions can pose complex questions, and the right answers and guidance, at the right time, can make the difference between financial gain and catastrophe. Just addressing insurance issues can be very confusing to the average person, and you need someone who has no hidden sales agenda to give you sound advice when you need it the most.
We love it when our clients and friends come to us for advice. We simply love helping people. We are problem-solvers. But most of all, we provide a steady hand through life transitions, some of which can be a little scary and unsettling.
Portfolio Management
The most important thing about managing money is managing market risk. What is the right allocation of stocks, bonds, and cash for you? Should you use individual stocks, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, annuities, or other financial instruments? How do you decide what the best approach is? Should you consider Alternative Investments in your portfolio that have a low or no correlation to the stock and bond markets? What about crypto, hedge funds, private equity, real estate investment trusts, or other financial instruments? We help you sort through all the risk/return and allocation issues to put together a plan that makes sense—and that you can easily understand. We demystify investing and never gamble with our clients’ money. We are conservative risk managers and problem-solving planners, not day-traders. We monitor our clients’ portfolios regularly, rebalance investments as needed, and make helpful changes as things change in our clients’ lives. We are hands-on managers and always available to our clients when they need us. We love it when they call us, and we have had a policy of returning all client phone calls within 24 hours or less. That’s been our policy for 25 years. Still is.
Estate & Legacy Strategies
Many people want to leave some money to their children or to charities of their choice. Sometimes both. Working with some great estate planning attorneys and tax advisors, we help our clients consider the tax implications of structuring investments, consider the gift tax rules, and explore the different kinds of wealth transfer strategies for families. We have major churches and foundations as clients, too. We have long experience in working with those who wish to be good stewards of their money long after they are gone. We spend a lot of time listening to what families want—and what their concerns are. Nearly all families have issues of one kind or another. We are sensitive to our clients’ needs and wishes for leaving a legacy. When it comes to putting in place very important estate planning documents, we can provide practical advice based on lessons learned over the past 25 years. Some of this is experience you just can’t get out of a book or on the Internet.
